When you load the project you maybe better disable the 'replace' checkbox to store your existing channels. The new channel is an extra color channel used by the background shader to store the shadow. You can render your image with a new output object (for example Tga RGB) where you bind the 'shadow_alpha' channel to the color channels.

The metall and metallic shader are similar except the color curve. In the metall shader there is only one curve which controls the brightness of the base color by the view angle. In the metallic shader there is a color curve which controls the color itself by the view angle (View description image).
